Download and apply the Engforce Utility that Roxio people wrote for this very problem. It "persuades" the update to go through properly.

47-0-2: Adjusting and Disabling Windows XP CD writing Feature (Author: PC Help Desk)

Most members will replace Windows XP built-in CD-writing program with a third party program. This may cause conflicts. To adjust XP`s Features:

Click "My Computer" | right-click your CD/RW | select Properties | click the "Recording Tab" | Clear the Checkbox next to "Enable CD Recording".

This will prevent XP from trying to run its own wizard when you insert a blank CD and stops XP from interfering with your packet-writing software.

47-0-3: Problems installing Direct CD (Author: Patrick ~Roxio Moderator)

DIRECT CD PROBLEM:

This is a Roxio response to a person who said they could not install Direct CD from their installation CD but could install everything else. If you are having this problem, the following should fix it:

Instructions on how to remove and replace the upperfilters and the lowerfilters in the registry:

Download the file or files shown in step 11 to a folder on your hard drive prior to doing the following procedure.

BACK UP THE REGISTRY BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES TO IT!

1. Go to "Start" then "Run" and type "regedit" and press enter or click "OK".

How to back up the registry:
a) Click on File menu in the upper left and choose "Export".
b) In the save in select a location to save the registry file copy (example: c:\My Documents)
c) In the file name give it a name (example: backup registry).
d) In the lower left under the export range make sure the "all" option is selected.
e) Click on "Save" and you have backed up your registry.

2. Look for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", Expand it (Either double click it or click the + beside it).

3. Under the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", Expand the System folder (Either double click it or click the + beside it).

4. Under the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System", Expand the CurrentControlSet folder (Either double click it or click the + beside it).

5. Under the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet", Expand the Control folder (Either double click it or click the + beside it).

6. Under the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control", Expand the Class folder (Either double click it or click the + beside it).

7. Under the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class" look fo the folder named {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and left click on it one time to highlight it.

8. Delete the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values (found on the right hand side of the screen) from the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

9. To delete the upper and lower filters using your left mouse button click on the lowerfilters entry to highlight it and then right click on it and choose the delete option and repeat the procedure for the upper filters.

10. Exit the registry.

11. Run (Double Click) the ecdc_v5.3.5.10_plt_enu.exe patch for the Platinum Version or ecdc_v5.3.5.10_basic_enu.exe for the Basic Version, click install and finish patch then run the driveup_v5.3.5c.exe patch if your drive still is not recognized.

12. Reboot the system

CD-ROM was first introduced to replace the large numbers of floppy disks which had become necessary to install software such as Microsoft Office. A user had to insert a CD-ROM into the drive and then run a command, usually setup.exe or install.exe, to start the installation.

With the introduction of Windows 95, a new feature called AutoPlay enabled programs to be automatically run and was intended to make CDs easier to use. It also enabled audio CDs to be played.

Equipment to create CDs was initially very expensive but now prices have dropped to several hundred pounds and CD-ROM writers are often used to create backups or to store files that are accessed directly from CD-ROM without having to be installed onto hard disk. Increasingly, CD is a medium for storing HTML web pages and other files such as spreadsheet, presentation, audio, video, graphics and help (for example Microsoft's winhelp and HTML Help).

AutoPlay works in Windows 95 by looking at the CD, or CD-ROM, that the user inserts. If it's an audio CD then it is played but if it is a CD-ROM that contains an autorun.inf file in the root directory then the instructions in this are run.

autorun.inf allows only programs, files that end in .exe or .com, to be run. AutoPlay was never intended to be used to automatically run other files, such as .html, but StarterFile enables this limitation to be overcome.

AutoPlay was also only intended to work with CD-ROM but it can be made to work with other media such as floppy disks and Iomega Zip drives.

A typical autorun.inf file to install software would be located in the root directory of the CD and contain three lines in text format (ASCII) like this:

Setup.exe would be expected to be found in the root directory of the CD.

In order to get rid of the "ctcatend" error do the following:

1) Close any open programs, especially those included with Easy CD/DVD Creator 6
2) Press CTRL-ALT-DELETE on your keyboard which should launch TASK MANAGER.
3) End task on any programs running referring to EASY CD CREATOR including but not limited to MEDIADB.EXE, PLAYLIST.EXE, and RXMON.EXE
4) Find the ROXIO folder located in c:\windows\application data
5) Right click on the ROXIO folder there and choose RENAME.  Call the folder ROXIO.OLD
6) Now restart the application that was giving you that error message and it should no longer come up.

NOTE: If you are unable to rename the folder because permission is denied or the folder may be in use, boot the machine in safe mode and then rename the folder.  Then reboot in normal mode and continue with step 6.

For Windows 2000/XP
-------------------
1) Close any open programs, especially those included with Easy CD/DVD Creator 6
2) Press CTRL-ALT-DELETE on your keyboard which should launch TASK MANAGER.
3) Click on the PROCESSES tab
4) End any processes referring to EASY CD CREATOR including but not limited to MEDIADB.EXE, PLAYLIST.EXE, and RXMON.EXE
5) Find the ROXIO folder located in "c:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data" where USERNAME is the name of the user you are currently logged in as
6) Right click on the ROXIO folder and choose RENAME.  Call the folder ROXIO.OLD
7) Now restart the application that was giving you that error message and it should no longer come up.

NOTE: If you are unable to rename the folder because permission is denied or the folder may be in use, boot the machine in safe mode and then rename the folder.  Then reboot in normal mode and continue with step 7.

47-0-6: Uninstalling Easy CD Creator using Control Panel (Author: Patrick ~ Roxio Moderator)

 

1) Uninstall Easy CD Creator 5 using the Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs Applet
2) Delete the directory c:\program files\roxio (if it exists)
3) Delete the directory c:\program files\adaptec (if it exists)
4) Delete the directory c:\program files\common files\roxio shared (if it exists)
5) Delete the directory c:\program files\common files\adaptec shared (if it exists)
6) Delete the key "ADAPTEC" in HKEY_Local_Machine\Software located in the Registry (if it exists)
7) Delete the key "ROXIO" in HKEY_Local_Machine\Software located in the Registry (if it exists)
6) Delete the key "ADAPTEC" in HKEY_Current_User\Software located in the Registry (if it exists)
7) Delete the key "ROXIO" in HKEY_Current_User\Software located in the Registry (if it exists)
8) Reboot and reinstall Easy CD Creator 5, reboot after the installation
9) Download and install the 5.3.5 update for Easy CD Creator 5:

47-0-7: Clean un-install (Care of ~ Brendon T)

 

Un-install Brendon:

Remove all CD Recording software(without restarting your system):

1. Uninstall all Adaptec Software from your system, do not reboot
("Add\Remove Programs" in Control Panel)
Look for Easy CD Creator, Direct CD, Take Two
2. Uninstall all other burning software, (your computer or CD-Recorder may have come with software)
3. Reboot

Next Clean Easy CD Creator completely from your system:

1. Go to "Start" then "Search", look in C:\ (or the drive where
your operating system is located) and search for: Cdr4, Cdral, Cdrtc, L3*.acm
2. Please delete the files found.
3. Go to "My Computer" and double click it.
4. Go into your C:\ drive (C:\ is default install drive, compensate
accordingly if you installed in another location)
5. Go into the "Program Files" Folder
6. Look for a "Adaptec" folder and if found delete it
7. Look for a "Direct CD" folder and if found delete it
8. Go into the "Common Files" Folder
9. Look for an "Adaptec" and/or "Adaptec Shared" folder and if found delete them.
10. Delete the "InstallShield" folder.
WARNING: THE NEXT STEP INVOLVES EDITING YOUR SYSTEM REGISTRY. WE
STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU EXPORT YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY
EDITING. EDITING YOUR REGISTRY INCORRECTLY CAN CAUSE IRREPARABLE
SYSTEM DAMAGE. WE RECOMMEND THAT IF YOU DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE
EDITING YOUR REGISTRY THAT YOU SKIP THIS STEP.
(This process is a bit pointless if you skip the registry trimming bit. - Brendon T)

Clean Easy CD Creator from your Registry:

1. Go to "Start" then "Run" and type "regedit" and press enter or click "OK"
2. Look for "HKey_Local_Machine", Expand it (Either double click it or click the + beside it)
3. Look for" Software", Expand it and select "Adaptec", if found,
and delete (click once it will become high lighted then press "delete" (delete on your keyboard)
4. Look for "Hkey_Current_User", expand it
5. Look for "Software", expand it
6. Select "Adaptec", if found, and delete it

IF YOU ARE NOT USING WINDOWS 2000 OR WINDOWS XP PLEASE SKIP STEP SEVEN

7. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

Reinstall Easy CD Creator in this manner:

1. Install Easy CD Creator from the Roxio install disk (We recommend
a custom install and removing Take Two from the installation, also
if you receive a warning that no CD Recorder was detected continue
with the install anyway) but don't reboot.

2. Please make sure that you install the latest software updates
for Easy CD Creator. For your convenience I have included the correct
links for you to download the latest updates for your Roxio Software.

After installing the updates, please reboot your system.

**For the Platinum version of the software**

5.3.5 update

Installing Easy CD & DVD Creator 6:

Updating Your Software to the Latest Version:

(Note: For this process, you will need the Login and Password that you receive when registering Easy CD & DVD Creator 6.)

  1. Go to "Start" then "Programs" then "Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6" and select "Home" (note you may need to click the down arrows to see "Home").

  2. In the upper left corner of this applet there is an icon that looks like a sheet of paper. If you move your mouse over this, a pop up will display "Menu", select it then select "Advanced Configuration"

  3. Select the "Check Now" button from the dialog.

Updating in Windows 2000 and Message"…Administrative Privileges…"

If you go to "Menu" (in Home) then "Advanced Configuration" and under "Roxio Updater" you click the "Check Now" button and receive the following message "You do not have administrator privileges for updating software. Please contact your system administrator."

Check to see that the user account you are logged on with has Administrative Privileges. Use the following steps to see whether you have the admin privileges (if you have admin privileges visit our website www.Roxio.com to download the latest software updates):

  1. Go to "Start" then to "Settings" and select "Control Panel"
  2. Double Click "Users and Passwords"

Click "Cancel" and then log off the computer and log back on with a user account that has Administrative privileges before updating Easy CD Creator.

If you have administrative privileges and you receive the error message you will need to download and install the latest update from http://support.roxio.com/, which includes a fix for this issue as well as updates your software.


Using Roxio Assistant:

Roxio Assistant is designed to correct Engine Initialization errors. If Easy CD & DVD Creator's Engine does not initialize, the applications in Easy CD & DVD Creator will not recognize your recorder.

After running Roxio assistant, you should update Easy CD & DVD Creator as described above in "Updating Your Software to the Latest Version:".

  1. RoxAssist.exe is located at:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\Upgrade\RoxAssist.exe
    (Note: If you have modified the installation of Windows or Easy CD & DVD Creator, the file may be located in a different location.)

  2. After running this program you should receive the message "Engine initialized successfully with full recorder support".

  3. If you do not receive the message, update your Virus software and then check and clean your system for viruses. After the removal of any viruses, uninstall and then reinstall Easy CD & DVD Creator (use "Add Remove Programs" in "Control Panel".)

Roxio Assistant: In some instances Roxio Assistant may require the installation CD, not allowing you to "Cancel" with out it. In this case you will need to insert the Easy CD & DVD Creator install disc into your drive so that Roxio Assistant will have access to needed files.


CD or DVD drive Not Recognized:

  1. Run Roxio assistant as described above.

  2. Update Easy CD and DVD Creator as described above.

  3. Support for Newer Recorders: Your CD or DVD drive may be newer than the drives Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 already supports. You can add support for newer drives by using the Roxio Updater. You may also check our online database for supported drives at: http://rpp.roxio.com/drives/?page=supported_drives

  4. Is Drag-to-Disc Interfering: You may not be able to use your burner (CD/DVD recorder), or the burner may not be recognized if it is already being used by another Easy CD & DVD Creator application (for example, Drag-to-Disc).

Drag-to-Disc uses formatted discs, Easy CD & DVD Creator's: Creator Classic, AudioCentral, Disc Copier, PhotoSuite, and DVD Builder all need blank unformatted discs. Remove the formatted disc and replace it with a blank, unformatted disc.

Here are some behaviors that indicate the disc in the burner is a formatted disc:


FAT 32 File System Limitations:

When using a hard drive formatted as FAT32, individual files cannot exceed 4GB in size. When using DVD Builder, approximately 90 minutes of DV video can be captured before exceeding this file size. NTFS formatted hard drives do not have this 4GB file size limitation.

If you've encountered a free space error while encoding, and you've verified your hard drive has sufficient free space, you will need to split the clip, into clips that are smaller in size than 90 minutes (4GB).

For example try moving one or more of your clips to Movie B and re-encode. This will prevent your system from encountering the Windows FAT32 file size limitation.

Windows 98 and Windows Millennium can only use FAT formatted drives; with Windows 98/ME you will not be able to create files larger than 4GB.

To find out what your Windows 2000 or Windows XP hard drive is formatted as:

1. Use a Right Click on the "Start" button and choose "Explore"
2. In the Window, on the right, under the word "Folders"
3. Right click on the hard drive you want to examine, and choose "Properties"
4. On the "General" tab you will see "File system:" and the type of formatting used.

It is possible to convert your drive from FAT32 to NTFS. You will need to refer to Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) documentation for instructions.

47-0-9: Installing Easy CD Creator 5 (Care of ~ Terry W.)

INSTALL PROCEDURE FOR ALL VERSIONS OF ECDC VERSION 5 INTO THE XP OPERATING SYSTEM:

 

CLEAN BOOT MODE:

It is a good idea to practice entering and exiting "Clean Boot" mode before attempting the procedure. TO ENTER "Clean Boot" MODE UTILIZE THE FOLLOWING STEPS A THROUGH G:

a) Go To "Start" and select "Run," type "msconfig" and click "Ok." The "System Configuration Utility" box will appear on your screen.

b) On the "General" tab of the "System Configuration Utility" box if your system is set for "Normal Startup"; change from a "Normal Startup" to a "Selective Startup" by doing a left mouse click inside the small circle (radio button) to the left of Selective Startup. A dot should appear inside the circle.

c) Left Click on the Startup Tab. Then left click on "Disable All".

d) Left Click on the Services Tab. At the bottom select "Hide All Microsoft Services" by left clicking inside the small square (radio button). A check mark should appear inside the small square. Look to the right and with your mouse select "Disable All".

e) Select "Apply" by doing a left mouse click on "Apply". Pause for a moment and when the "Close" button appears, click on "Close".

f) A System Configuration box will appear. Do a left mouse click on "Restart". Your computer will now restart.

g) Allow it to restart normally and if log-on is required, be sure to again log on with Administrative privileges. Following log-on, the first box that appears will be a message concerning your system configuration. When the box appears do a left mouse click on "OK". Another box will appear and it will be the "System Configuration Utility" box that you saw previously in (b) immediately above. Do a left mouse click on "Cancel".

You are now in the "Clean Boot" mode and your computer will stay in the clean boot mode on each subsequent reboot if you repeat Step (g) each time your computer reboots.

If you wish to abort the install procedure at any time, you should leave "Clean Boot" mode. TO EXIT "CLEAN BOOT" MODE DO THE FOLLOWING STEPS H THROUGH J:

h) Go To "Start" and select "Run," type "msconfig" and click "OK." The "System Configuration Utility" box will appear on your screen.

i) Change from "Selective Startup" to "Normal Startup" by doing a left mouse click inside the small circle to the left of "Normal Startup". A dot will appear inside the circle.

j) Select "Apply" by doing a left mouse click on "Apply". Pause for a moment and when the "Close" button appears do a left mouse click on "Close". This will cause a "System Configuration" box to appear. Do a left mouse click on "Restart". Your computer will now do a normal restart and when Windows comes up you will no longer be in "Clean Boot" mode.

PROTECTING YOUR REGISTRY:

I show how to protect your registry using the following registry protection procedure. You may already know how to provide protection by using Window’s "System Restore" utility that is provided with your XP operating system. I prefer the "System Restore" method because it works pretty much automatically. It is supposed to sense when you are preparing for a significant computer change and store a copy of the registry ahead of the change. If you use "System Restore", you should create a Restore Point now, and then you may skip the following steps having to do with exporting and importing your registry. If you do not use " System Restore" and desire to utilize it for registry protection, the first step of utilizing it is to create a "Restore Point". Do that now.

If you do not use the "System Restore" utility, it is a very good idea to study the following steps prior to attempting the install. The steps can also be used to restore your registry. Once you have studied them in detail, it is recommended that you export your registry prior to performing the install procedure. To export your registry, follow steps A1 through C1. DO NOT IMPORT your registry unless it becomes corrupted or messed up while you are performing an edit of the registry during the install procedure.

 

A1. While in "Clean Boot" mode, go to Start, Run, type in Regedit in the Run box and hit OK. The Registry Editor box arrives on your monitor; it is a double-paned window and the pane on the left is smaller than the pane on the right. Stay out of the pane on the right. Don't do any deletions in either pane during this procedure.

The stuff that is shown in the left window is called a directory "tree", and will probably appear in "expanded" form. It probably will have a bunch of plus signs and minus signs showing next to a bunch of named folders, or maybe just a few plus signs and a few minus signs showing next to a few named folders. The safest thing to do in utilizing this procedure is to put it into "contracted" form. Do a left mouse button click directly on one of the minus buttons and the directory tree will contract. Continue to left click on the minus buttons until there are no minus buttons remaining. There will only be one line item remaining and it will be labeled "My Computer" and will have a plus sign next to it.

B1. Click directly on the name "My Computer" so that the name becomes "blued in". Now click on the File menu, which is located directly above the folder, and choose "Export". A box will come up and it will be titled "Export Registry File". In the little pane titled "Save In", you will see a folder called "My Documents" if not, navigate to "My Documents" using the up or down navigation arrows. To the right of "My Documents" you will see several symbols; one is a tiny folder symbol with a star in its upper right corner. Left click on the tiny, starred folder. A folder titled "new folder" will now appear in the main pane of the Export Registry File box that you are working in. Without doing anything with your mouse, use your keyboard and type the words "Registry Copies". The words "Registry Copies" now appear in place of the words "new folder". Using your mouse do a left click in the blank area of the pane and the words Registry Copies will become permanently affixed to the new folder that you just created.

C1. Using your mouse, double left click directly on the Registry Copies folder and the folder will open. In the small pane titled "File Name", type in a name for your copy of the registry that you are going to save. Use something that is descriptive that you will be able to come back to at a later date and which will allow making the proper choice for registry restoration. I usually use something like "RegistryRoxioPrior", which would be interpreted as a copy of the registry that existed prior to the installation of Roxio.

 

When you have chosen a name and typed it in the File Name pane, do a left click on "Save" which is located at bottom right. Congratulations, you just saved a complete current copy of your registry to the "Registry Copies" folder located in "My Documents".

THE FOLLOWING SHOWS HOW TO RESTORE YOUR REGISTRY. DO NOT PERFORM THE BALANCE OF THIS PORTION OF THE PROCEDURE AT THIS TIME. KEEP THE BALANCE OF THIS PORTION OF THE PROCEDURE AND THE UPPER PORTION AS WELL FOR FUTURE REFERENCE SO YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO RECOVER FROM A CORRUPTED REGISTRY PROBLEM. TO IMPORT A COPY OF YOUR REGISTRY AND RESTORE THE REGISTRY TO WHAT EXISTED PRIOR TO ITS CORRUPTION, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING STEPS, A2 AND B2:

If your registry has become corrupted or if you have messed it up in some way, the following restoration procedure may help you out of some difficulty. The procedure assumes you have previously saved a copy or copies of the registry in a folder called "Registry Copies" located in your "My Documents" folder. If you import your registry during or after performing this Basic installation procedure, you must redo the procedure for the procedure to be of any value to you:

 

A2. While in "Clean Boot" mode, go to Start, Run, type in Regedit in the Run box and hit OK. The Registry Editor box arrives on your monitor; it is a double-paned window and the pane on the left is smaller than the pane on the right. Stay out of the pane on the right. Don't do any deletions in either pane during this procedure.

Continue to contract the tree by left clicking on the minus buttons to the point that you have only one folder showing with a plus sign beside it. The name of the folder will be "My Computer".

B2. Click directly on the name "My Computer" so that the name becomes "blued in". Now click on the File menu, which is located directly above the folder, and choose "Import". A box will come up and it will be titled "Import Registry File". Beside "Look In" will be the folder entitled "Registry Copies". In the main pane of the box you will see a file or a number of files listed and these files will be saved registry copies that you may have installed there previously. Using your mouse, you may now left click on the registry copy of your choice. Choosing "Open" will immediately install this copy of the registry that you clicked on to your computer. Prior to choosing "Open", you should consider the following:

The registry copy that you use to restore should be one that makes sense to use. If you did what you should have done and exported a copy immediately prior to doing whatever it was that corrupted your registry, you should choose to restore your registry with the version of the registry from the folder that existed immediately prior to its corruption. Using an older edition of the registry may cause some problems such as some of your more recently installed applications may not run.

 

THE ECDC 5 INSTALL PROCEDURE:

Keep very close track as you go through the procedure so that you do not accidentally (or purposefully) do things out of the proper order. Don’t skip around within the procedure.

  1. Download the latest ECDC update 5.3.5.10 to your hard drive. It is available at: http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/software_updatesv5.jhtml
  2. Download engforce.exe patch to your hard drive. This patch is available for download at http://softwareupdates.roxio.com/gm/support/tools/engforce.exe

3. Log on with Administrative privilege and enter "Clean Boot" mode. You must be in Clean Boot mode to properly perform this procedure.

4. You will now begin the Clean Uninstall by removing any existing Roxio ECDC software and any non-Roxio CD burning applications that may be residing on your computer. I will now drop the phrase "left mouse click" from the remainder of the procedure. Let it be understood that "go to" "choose" or "click on" means to employ a left mouse button click.

Go to "Start", "Search", "All Files And Folders" and do a search of your C Directory, or the drive where your operating system is located, for prtseqrd.sys. If you do not find this file, don't worry about it. If you find the file, rename its extension to .rox by doing the following:

Right click on the file name and choose "Rename", then change the name from "prtseqrd.sys" to "prtseqrd.rox", This file is installed with Take Two, if you have never installed Take Two; the file will not be present. If you decide to exit this procedure before you finish it, you may wish to rename the file back to prtseqrd.sys. You will be doing that later in the procedure anyway, but for the time being it should be named prtseqrd.rox.

5. Go to Start, Control Panel and Using Add/Remove Programs remove all Adaptec/Roxio software from your system (look for program names such as ECDC, Direct CD, Take Two). DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

6. Uninstall all existing CD burning software from your computer using Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel. DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

7. Go to Start, Search, All Files and Folders, and do a search of your C drive, or the drive where your operating system is located, for any of the following files: cdr4dll.dll, cdral.dll, cdrtc.dll, cdr4vsd.vsd and delete them. You may not find but two of the files present; don’t worry if you don’t find all of them. You can do a multiple file search (search for all four at once) if you type them in with a comma and one space separating each of the four files. If you feel uncomfortable about deleting them, you can NOTE THEIR EXACT LOCATION and then copy them to a floppy before deleting them. You also have the alternative of renaming them and that will prevent them from being utilized in error (if you rename them you probably should note their original name in case you wish to make them usable again later, in which case you will also need to note their exact location).

8. Go into Program Files and delete any folders named Adaptec, Roxio or Direct CD.

 

9. While still in Program Files, double click on the folder called Common Files and look for and delete any folders named Adaptec or Adaptec Shared.

10. Go into the "InstallShield" Folder (C:\Program Files\Common File\InstallShield and rename the "Engine" and "IScript" folders to "Engine.rox" and "Iscript.rox" You may rename folders in the same way you rename files, by right clicking directly on the folder and choosing "Rename" from the menu that appears.

 

 

WARNING: THE NEXT STEPS INVOLVE EDITING YOUR SYSTEM REGISTRY. IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU EXPORT A COPY OF YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY EDITING BECAUSE INCORRECT REGISTRY EDITING CAN CAUSE SYSTEM DAMAGE. TO ENABLE RESTORING A REGISTRY, ONE MUST EXPORT A COPY OF IT PRIOR TO THE EDIT.

 

11. Removal of Adaptec Folders from the Registry. This involves registry editing. If you did not export a copy of your registry, be very careful with your registry editing. Don’t do anything that does not appear exactly as described.

  1. Go to Start, Run, and type in Regedit and hit OK. This will open your Registry Editor. On the left side of the screen will be a directory tree. Move your cursor to the plus button that is located on the left side of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and give it a left click. This will expand the tree. You should now be able to see a Software folder listed there in the left pane and it should be about the fourth one down under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE". Click the plus button to the left of the Software folder and another expansion will occur. At or near the top of the new expansion you should see a folder named Adaptec. Right click directly on the folder called Adaptec and a menu should appear under your cursor. Choose Delete from the menu that has appeared. It won't delete if you have lost "Permissions".
  2. To restore "Permissions, look just under "Register Editor" at the top left of the box in which you are working at the set of menu choices residing there. Choose Edit, then Permissions, and another box will appear. This box has one tab and it is labeled "Security". The box has two panes, one at the top and one at the bottom of the box. Above the top pane is a label called Group or User Name. Some identities will be listed there such as "Administrators", "System" and your current personal log-on identity (Example: John Doe). If any of these three identities are not present, you must add them. To add an identity, left click on Add and type the identity into the "Select User or Groups Window" and then click Okay. When all three identities are present (there may be other identities present; do not remove any of the other identities), do the following for EACH OF THE THREE IDENTITIES, "Administrators", "System", and your personal log-on identity: Left click on the identity. In the pane directly underneath, if there is not a check mark beside "Full Control", then "Permissions" do not exist for the identity. Establish permissions by installing a check mark in the box beside "Full Control". This will cause at least two check marks to appear, one at Full Control and one in the Read box. Click Apply then click Okay. If there is either a bold or grayed-out check mark beside Full Control and Read, you are okay. Do the same for the remaining two identities and then proceed with the next step.
  3. You should now be able to delete the Adaptec Folder, please do so.
  4. Repeat Step (a) above for "HKEY_CURRENT_USER"…i.e...delete the Adaptec folder in residence under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" in the exact same manner as you did in Step a for the Adaptec folder under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE". You may have to restore "Permissions" for the same three identities for this Adaptec folder in the same way as you did in Step b above to be able to delete this Adaptec folder.
  5. Before leaving the Registry, you must check to make sure "Permissions" exist for the "Software" folders of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and "HKEY_CURRENT_USER". This is done in the next step.
  6. Click directly on the Software folder located under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER and do the following:

Do the same for the remaining two identities and then proceed with the next step.
  8. Repeat Step (f) and (g) for the Software folder located under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".
  9. You may now exit the registry by clicking the red X in the upper right hand corner of the registry box. It is not necessary to shrink the registry tree back to where it was when you entered the Registry. DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

12. If under Step 4 you found a file called prtseqrd.sys and renamed it to prtseqrd.rox, it is now time to name it back to prtseqrd.sys. Using Start, Search, All Files And Folders find prtseqrd.rox and rename it to prtseqrd.sys

13. It is now time to install ECDC from your CD, but before we do that we must DO A COMPUTER RESTART. After the restart, you are to continue in "Clean Boot" mode. Allow your computer to restart normally and when log-on is required, be sure to again log on under the same identity that you have been using for this procedure. Following log-on, the first box that appears will be a message concerning your system configuration. When the box appears click on "OK". Another box will appear and it will be the "System Configuration Utility" box. Click on "Cancel". You are still in "Clean Boot" mode.

14. Install ECDC using your installation CD. If your installation CD has "Take Two" on it, do a "Custom Install" and DO NOT INSTALL "Take Two"; it is not compatible with XP. If you do not have "Take Two", you do not have to do the Custom Install, just go ahead and do a complete install of all components. If an error message appears saying no CD drives are present, ignore the message and continue. Also, when the install completes, DO NOT DO A COMPUTER RESTART and don’t try to use an ECDC application at this time, to try to do so may only result in generating further problems.

15. Now you must go back into the registry to check "Permissions".

  1. Enter the registry using Start, Run, type in Regedit and click Okay. In the left pane of the Registry Editor Box under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, find Software, expand it if necessary and find the folder "Adaptec". Click directly on the Adaptec Folder.

  3. b) Return to the left pane of the Registry Editor Box. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Adaptec, you will see a folder named "Adaptec Shared". Click directly on the "Adaptec Shared" Folder.
  4. Look just under "Register Editor" at the top left of the box in which you are working at the set of menu choices residing there. Choose Edit, then Permissions, and another box will appear. This box has one tab and it is labeled "Security". The box has two panes, one at the top and one at the bottom of the box. Above the top pane is a label called Group or User Name. Some identities will be listed there such as "Administrators", "System" and your current personal log-on identity (Example: John Doe). If any of these three identities are not present, you must add them. To add an identity, left click on Add and type the identity into the "Select User or Groups Window" and then click Okay. When all three identities are present (there may be other identities present; do not remove any of the other identities), do the following for EACH OF THE THREE IDENTITIES, "Administrators", "System", and your log-on identity: Left click on the identity. 16. You should now be able to run the latest ECDC Update 5.3.5.10. Open the folder in which you stored the update and double click on it to install it. DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

17. It is now time to exit "Clean Boot" mode. To exit "Clean Boot" mode, go to "Start" and select "Run", type "msconfig" and click "OK." The "System Configuration Utility" box will appear on your screen. Change from "Selective Startup" to "Normal Startup" by clicking inside the small circle to the left of "Normal Startup". A dot will appear inside the circle. Select "Apply" and "Close". This will cause your "System Configuration" box to appear. Click on "Restart". Your computer will now do a normal restart and when Windows comes up you will no longer be in "Clean Boot" mode. Be sure and log on exactly as before.

18. Try to start your ECDC software. If your software does not work properly, install the engforce.exe patch.

Open the folder where you stored the patch, engforce.exe, and double click on it to install it. Restart your computer. Your ECDC software should now work properly. If you did indeed have to run the patch to get the software to work right, it is a good idea to reinstall update 5.3.5.10. The patch was designed to run with a previous update and running it could change some of your files to those of the previous update, so rerunning Update 5.3.5.10 will insure that you remain updated to the latest update.

After you have utilized this procedure you should be able to go in and out of "Clean Boot" mode at will, you should be able to export and import your registry if the need arises, and maybe you will even end up with a working Platinum…please keep in mind that this procedure does not solve all the Platinum install problems with the XP operating system, just some of them.

47-0-10: Using PhotoRelay in ECD version 5 with Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 (Care of ~ Steve)

Version 6 has taken away one of my favorite tools, "PhotoRelay". I use this extensively for creating standalone slide shows on CD, and one of it's big features is that it does NOT change the original photo file. After calling Roxio support and essentially getting nowhere, I came upon a very easy method of keeping the program.
1: Zip up the old PhotoRelay program installed with version 5. It is found at "C:\Program Files\Adaptec\Easy CD Creator 5". Make sure that you zip it with the "full path info"
2: Install version 6 (which automatically uninstalls version 5 containing PhotoRelay)
3: After a successful install of ECD 6, simply unzip PhotoRelay with it creating the saved paths. ( I actually installed it at "C:\Program Files\Roxio" letting it create the PhotoRelay folder and subsequent folders under that.
4: Go into "C:\Program Files\Roxio\PhotoRelay" and find the file "PhRelay.exe", copy, and then create a shortcut on your Desktop or wherever you wish. The program now works again thanks to the folks who wrote it and were kind enough to keep the supporting files (DLL's, etc) in the same folder.

Hope this helps someone else...I was quite frustrated with the tech response. Seems to me that if I BOUGHT the program, and Roxio no longer wants to support it, and it isn't hurting their current software, they can at least give me the option of KEEPING the program rather than just removing it.

47-0-12: How to Un-install Easy CD Creator and Install Version 6.

TO UNINSTALL EASY CD CREATOR 5 AND INSTALL VERSION 6:
Follow the steps below to clean your system.  It involves more than just a regular uninstall / re-install.  Please call us if you have any questions about the procedure.
First, remove "Easy CD Creator 5" from "Add/Remove Programs" in the "Control Panel".  Also, if you have any other Roxio or CD Burning software, you should also remove it at this step.


Go to this web site and save the file that will be downloaded to your desktop.

Find the above file on your desktop and double click on it.  Follow the on-screen prompts and then reboot your computer at the end of the process.

Now, go to the following website:  http://www.download.com   

Locate the search box, and do a search for "Registry Crawler".  On the next page that comes up, click on the link for "Download Now" on the right side of the screen for "Registry Crawler v4.05".  Save the file to your desktop.  

 Now, find the file that you downloaded and double click on it to install the program.  Just follow the onscreen prompts.  Afterwards, double click on the shortcut that is now on your desktop for "Registry Crawler" and then click on the "Try Now" button to start it


Perform a search for "Roxio" by entering it into the "Search" box, and also make sure that the 7 checkboxes below it are checked.  Then click on the "Go" button. 
Now, highlight all of the entries it finds in the lower window.  Left-click once on the first entry, and then press the "Ctrl" and the letter "A" key at   the same time to select all of the entries.  Now click on the "Delete" button on the right hand side of the screen.
Perform the same process as above, and search for "Adaptec".  Delete all the entries that it finds.

Now adjust your startup so that no programs are running in the background when you re-install the software.  Follow these steps.

1.  Click on the "Start" button and click on "Run"
2.  Type "msconfig" and hit ENTER
3.  On the "General" tab of the System Configuration Tool, choose "Selective Startup" and uncheck the box labelled "Load Startup Items".
4.  Click on "Apply", and then click on "Close" to reboot your computer.

Reinstalling Easy CD and DVD Creator 6

A:. Place your Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 disc in your CD drive.
B:  Within 5-10 seconds you should see a prompt saying the disc has been detected and asking if you would like to install the program.
C:  Continue with the installation and reboot the PC when prompted

NOTE: If during installation you receive a message saying that there is no CD recorder detected and your CD/DVD recordable drive is supported by the program, choose to continue with the installation because support for your specific drive may be added by an update for the program

D: Download and install the most recent program updates for Easy CD Creator.   These updates fix issues since the product has been released and adds support for additional CD/DVD recorders.  To download the updates please go to the web site listed below.

E: Once you download and install all the updates ensure that you restart your PC before using Easy CD & DVD Creator 6.

To turn on all of your startup items again, click on the "Start" button and select "Run".  Type MSCONFIG in the box and click on "OK".   On the "General" tab select "Normal Startup" and click on "Apply" and then "OK".  Reboot your computer and everything should be back to normal.
